Members of DEMSA are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and are committed to treating their customers fairly. As part of this commitment they invest heavily in training and competency assessment of their staff and associates. DEMSA assists members in providing relevant training and independent quality assurance service to ensure that the quality of advice and services provided to their clients are consistently high. This is reinforced by regular independent surveys of clients on debt management plan with a DEMSA member. This feedback is monitored and fed back to members to ensure that they update individual training programmes to match their job roles (e.g. debt adviser).

DEMSA also assists its members and associates by providing regular regulatory updates so that they are appraised in good time of regulatory changes and key developments in industry best practices. Recent examples include the changes in accessing Bankruptcy and Debt Relief Orders (DROs). New complaint handling rule come into force in 2016 and these impact all debt management firms. Dealing with consumer vulnerability is an industry wide challenge and our Associate Members include leading experts in this field.

Formal debt advice qualifications

To complement this, in 2010, DEMSA launched a professional qualification in partnership with the Institute of Money Advisers (IMA), designed to demonstrate competency and help raise standards in the fee charging debt advice sector. The qualification is accredited by Staffordshire University (as equivalent to a first year degree/NVQ 4) and includes Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The Certificate in Money Advice Practice (CMAP) is an accredited qualification by the Money Advice Service.

DEMSA member staff that successfully complete the CMAP qualification are designated as accredited DEMSA debt advisers. Once accredited, compliance with our CPD scheme is an essential component of maintaining this accredited money adviser status. DEMSA offers regular qualify events to enable graduates to maintain the required level of CPD.

Training Partner – Institute of Money Advisers (IMA)

“The IMA’s ‘Certificate in Money Advice Practice’ was introduced in 2010 for advisers in the free advice sector and has played a key role in establishing a benchmark for high quality advice. The Institute is delighted to be able to be able to offer DEMSA members access to the qualification, as an opportunity for raising standards in the commercial debt management sector.

“The CMAP qualification provides a mechanism for improving the skills and competence of participating debt advisers and improves standards of advice given to clients at all stages of the debt solution. We have a good working relationship with DEMSA and DEMSA students. The 6 cohorts of students have been a success and also provided us with an opportunity to work with member firms to make minor adjustments in order to better suit the students’ needs. Many are now at the maintenance level and the IMA are working with DEMSA in the delivery of CPD.”

The IMA are supporting the DEMSA conference on 9 June 2016.
